Today we are getting to know a little bit more about the incredible face behind Planned to Perfection, Doreen Barker. With over 20 years experience in the wedding industry, she is a master at wedding co-ordination, floral styling and her décor hire options are endless.
If you are looking for someone to help you with your wedding day, perhaps you have found her right here. Grab yourself a cup of tea (or glass of champagne if you are feeling fancy) and get to know a little bit about Doreen, what makes her tick and her love for the wonderful KZN wedding industry.
Hooray: So Doreen, tell us about yourself Dooreen: With over 20 years in the wedding industry, creating beautiful weddings is definitely my passion! I live with my husband and two dogs in an old Kloof home with gorgeous fig trees that are over a 100 years old – I love them!
P.S I have just become a granny to my first grandchild – the most handsome little boy. **hooray side note: CONGRATULATIONS!!!
Hooray: How did you get into the wedding industry? Doreen: It all began with my love for throwing dinner parties at home. I would buy unique and different décor items to decorate our large dining room table. My friends loved my décor choice and wanted to borrow them for their own parties.
I saw a gap in the market and decided to buy these items in bulk to start hiring out. This materialised into people asking me to go one step further and co-ordinate the entire event for them which lead me into the wedding industry…. The rest, as they say, is history!
Hooray: Wine or champagne?
Doreen: Champers, morning, noon and night – “I only drink champagne on two occasions, when I am in love and when I am not” – Coco Chanel
Hooray: What inspires you? Doreen: I love watching new trends develop – whether it be in fashion, interiors or even in garden landscaping! This inspires me to translate these different creative areas into décor and floral styling for weddings.
For me, flipping through old magazines is my absolute best. Remembering old trends and bringing them back to life in a new and zesty way is what I love.
And of course, Pinterest! Who doesn’t get inspired by pages and pages of prettiness?
Hooray: What do you think the next big trend will be for 2018/2019 wedding season?
Doreen: I predict caramel and butterscotch flowers especially cymbidium orchids will be gaining popularity. I could also see this gorgeous pop up in stationery and linens.
Hooray: Tell us what would your ideal set up entail? Doreen: Fun, laughter, delicious snacks, copious amounts of coffee and a happy bride
Hooray: Running your own business can be difficult, do you have a daily routine? Doreen: I make sure I am awake at 5am every morning. The cappuccino machine is turned on and running throughout the day. Our brides love this – I mean, chatting wedding and sipping on cappuccinos… it really doesn’t get any better!
Hooray: How do you find your work/life balance? Doreen: I work from home, so I make sure I am at my desk by 8am. What I love about the wedding industry is that not one day is ever the same. I enjoy going on site visits to gorgeous venues and my absolute best is doing table mock ups with our brides.
In the evenings, its me time and I either take our dogs for a walk or spend time giving cuddles to my grandson or entertaining family and friends.
Hooray: Tell us about your favourite flower? Doreen: This is a hard one, there are so many! But I must admit dahlias are fast becoming my fave!
Hooray: Yes or No to food trucks? Doreen: Yes, food trucks can be awesome for a fun function and getting your fingers stuck in but, nothing beats an elegantly plated meal
Hooray: Tell us about your ideal wedding client. Doreen: I have come across the most diverse and unique brides over the last 23 years and loved every one of them, so this is a difficult question to answer!
I must say though, a bride who is not afraid to be different and who breaks away from the trend is always a fun bride to work with.
Hooray: What do you love most about your job?Doreen: That I get to help create someone’s most special day that they will remember for the rest of their lives. Also, what I love most is when the bride walks into the finished venue for the first time and I see the look on her face.
Hooray: How would you describe your style?
Doreen: I would say I have a very classical style with a contemporary flair. This does not mean I don’t love a bit of bling or a little vintage charm!
Hooray: Name 5 of your favourite wedding vendors that you enjoy working with. Bron Veale(Vanilla Photography) I have known Bron for 10 years and have just loved watching her grow and develop her business into what it is today Jarryd Sunkel (KZN Wedding DJ) You literally will not leave the dancefloor if Jarryd is the DJ at your wedding! Rania Tarr (NOSH Catering) Rania just makes the most delicious food (and her harvest tables are her forte). Taryn from Smith’s Bakeshop gets it right everytime! We thorouhgly enjoyed working with her over the years. Bash Paperie (Stationary) are so talented. They have a true passion for creating the perfect stationery for any event.
Doreen, thank you so much for sharing with us. Both Derryn and myself have worked with you on numerous occasions and we just love what you do and how you are always putting your brides’ needs first.
