Honeymoon Destinations – Local is Lekker

When it comes to honeymooning many newly-weds often feel like they need to venture overseas to properly celebrate their union. The truth is that there are actually plenty of destinations right here, within the borders of sunny South Africa, where you can have the time of your life no matter what your honeymoon flavour might be. Plus, it is likely to be much kinder on the pocket than those pricey Euro or Dollar destinations.

Obviously, your honeymoon spot should be determined by your particular tastes as a couple but whether you’re sporty, a foodie, a beach bum, or a mixture of all three we guarantee that you will find somewhere in South Africa to tick all of your boxes:

For the Adventurous

Some say South Africa is an adventure lover’s paradise. So if this is your vibe, you’re totally in luck. First, we’ve got surfing at the world renown break in JBay. This isn’t just for the experienced either. There are surf schools available for those who have always wanted to but just have never gotten around to learning how.

Then there is hiking in The Drakensburg (views for daysss) or Golden Gate National Park (which is super close to the quaint town of Clarens).

For something a little different, you could opt for a sandboarding adventure on the dunes in Wilderness or Kayaking (and lilo-ing!!) in Tstsikama to explore the quiet pools, ancient caves and luscious forest on Storm’s River.
Adventure can be found around almost every turn in this beautiful country.

For the Food and Wine Lover

The Cape Winelands is our pick when it comes to food and wine. We love everything from the gardens and bird nests of Babylonstoren, to wine tasting by tram in Franschoek or by bicycle in Stellenbosch, to blending your own wine at Middlevlei Wine Farm, to the Spice Route experience. All of these are exceptional ways to spend time and the delicious food options will leave you truly spoilt for choice.

If you prefer a quieter winelands experience you could head a little farther to the Robertson area or even Hermanus where, depending on your timing, you could catch glimpse of a friendly pod of whales.

For the Nature Buff

There are so many incredible game reserves dotted around South Africa. Some of our favourites include Phinda, Nambiti and Hluhluwe.

Marvel at the splendor of the Big 5 and have sundowners while watching animals gather at the watering hole. We tend to forget how lucky we are to live in a country so filled with abundant wildlife. It’s the quintessential safari experience and it is quite literally on your doorstep.

Many game lodges also offer exquisite spa facilities so you can enjoy a couple’s massage or full pamper session with your new spouse. **Bliss**

Full Relaxation (ie. For the Beach Bums)

A typical honeymoon includes plenty of lazing on the beach, cocktail in hand. If this is your style, South Africa can deliver this experience in spades.

From luxurious seaside hotels in Durban (read: Oyster Box) to the trendy Camps Bay beaches with vibey cafes and bars, your choice might be a difficult one… but not if you would like to swim in the ocean because then, as we all know, Durban’s Indian Ocean is the clear winner.

There are also many smaller and relatively untouched beaches along South Africa’s coastline like the beautiful little village of Paternoster, the rustic beauty of Coffee Bay and the flat, rock-free beach and gentle waves of Diaz Beach in Mossel Bay. All of these are seaside gems that would make a memorable honeymoon for you and your love.

For Those Who Battle to Make Decisions

Last, but not least, we have to mention luxury cruises. MSC Sinfonia is one of the most popular, with routes to Namibia, Mozambique, Durban and Cape Town.

Prices are super reasonable for the incredible benefits and activities on offer. Food and drink is available in abundance from cocktails that reallllllly give you bang for your buck to midnight feasts and high teas galore. It doesn’t stop there. A plethora of amenities is available for your enjoyment. There are swimming pools, jacuzzi’s, a splash pad, exclusive shopping, casinos, bars and clubs, spas and beauty salons and even a theatre.

It can be a crazy, action-packed experience or a lie-by-the-pool-and-relax-drinking-cocktails experience. The beauty of this option is that the choice is all yours. Plus, you can mix it up with a bit of craziness on one day and an all-day pool-side chill the next.

Rest assured, a honeymoon in South Africa is anything but bland so save yourself the extra hassle of visas and passports and keep it local, china.
