Please can you introduce yourself and your company to the Hooray readers.
Steven: My name is Steven Heyns, the owner of a DJ agency called The Wedding DJ
Hooray: Tell us a bit more about yourself
Steven: Husband to my amazing wife Susan and daddy of two boys Hayden and Jordan, who mean everything to me. Without their love and support I would not have been able to pursue my passion in life which is to entertain crowds with great music. I really love what I do, I don’t just say it, I live it.
Hooray: How did you get into the wedding industry?
Steven: I was the guy in school who always had the latest music, and ended up DJ’ing at school house parties (That’s a long time ago now). I then joined Nedbank after school where I met the legendary wedding DJ, John Roux in the early 2000’s. If it wasn’t for John, I probably would have never picked up headphones again.
Hooray: What inspires you?
Steven: I have my ears close to the ground in the wedding industry and listen to my industry friends.
Hooray: Running your own business can be hard, do you have a daily routine?
Steven: In this game it’s quite difficult to plan your day, I try and do the important stuff first though
Hooray: Tell us about your ideal wedding client.
Steven: I love couples who appreciate good music!
Hooray: What do you love most about your job?
Steven: Seeing a full dance floor and feeling part of something bigger than yourself
Hooray: Can you describe your music style?
Steven: I’m a commercial pop DJ.
Hooray: If there was one thing you could change about the wedding industry, what would it be?
Steven: The KZN Wedding industry is simply the best, the people make it, and I wouldn’t change a thing
*Hooray Side Note: Totally agree with you on this one Steven!
Hooray: The mistake you made that has taught you the most valuable lesson?
Steven: Don’t get overconfident
Hooray: If you had to get married (again) what would be the ONE non-negotiable?
Steven: A GREAT photographer
Hooray: Where do you see yourself and your company this time next year?
Steven: I currently have five DJs, I would like to see them just as busy as I am
Hooray: If you could be anything else in the wedding industry, what would you be and why?
Steven: I love what I do, and have no desire to be anything but a DJ. Besides, we don’t have editing to do after a wedding… lols.
*Hooray side note: Every photographer and videographer cringes!
Hooray: Tell us about your most embarrassing moment on the job.
Steven: Not recognising that my groom played for The Sharks 🙂 In my defense, I don’t watch rugby as often as I used to.
Hooray: Tell us who impacts you most in this beautiful business.
Steven: African Bear Photography, they make me want to be better
Hooray: Tell us about the last time you were really, really proud of yourself.
Steven: The bigger the job and the fuller the dance floor, the bigger the sense of accomplishment. But for me, just having the bride and groom come to me at the end of the evening to tell me I’ve made their day is normally enough 🙂
