The Wedding Co SA

If you are looking for someone to bring your wedding vision to life, then Kate is your girl!
The magic behind The Wedding Co SA, Kate and her team always produce the most amazing floral and decor installations, and we are always blown away by what they bring to the table!

A lover of gin and her hubby’s amazing cooking (this is the part where all the girls go green with envy), Kate is the most amazing person with the kindest heart.

This talented, down-to-earth mama, with an incredible sense of humour shares a little bit of what its like running not only The Wedding Company South Africa, but also Crystal Barn Country Estate with hubby, Scott.

Hooray: Hi Kate!
Kate: Hi Guys, my name is Kate Bain and I own The Wedding Company SA and Crystal Barn Country Estate

Hooray: Tell us about yourself
Kate: I’m a mum to 3 little ones, wife to a chef. Obsessed with flowers and family. Love making all things beautiful and spending time outdoors with my kids. My guilty pleasure is definitely wine and beautiful gins (normally concocted by my clever chef hubby, Scott)

Hooray: How did you get into the wedding industry?
Kate: I’d been involved in eventing and weddings both in SA and abroad since 2004 and had recently moved back to South Africa to have our eldest child.
A friend was selling her business, The Wedding Company SA, and I jumped at the opportunity to buy it, that was almost 8 years ago. Scott and I recently bought the balance of the Crystal Barn business, an amazing wedding venue in the Midlands.

Hooray: What inspires you?
Kate: Wow inspiration comes from everywhere – international blogs, online, clients, upcoming trends, nature . . . you name it!

Hooray: Running your own business can be hard, do you have a daily routine?
Kate: I start my day getting the kids off to school. I then check emails, reply and down my now cold green tea (because who has time to drink anything when the kids are in the house?!). I then try and go for a run or exercise. Every day is different but generally my mornings are spent in the office doing admin, corresponding with couples, styling and quoting on weddings and functions but often I’m out of the office either on site meetings with couples or at consults. Thursday and Fridays are always spent on site setting up for weddings.

Hooray: Tell us about your ideal wedding client.
Kate: Most of my clients are my ideal clients as we definitely attract couples that we work well with. But my dream clients are definitely the ones that give us creative carte blanche when designing their florals and decor.

Hooray: What do you love most about your job?
Kate: EVERYTHING! Honestly I’m blessed . . . I love my job. There are very few parts of my job that I do not love. It definitely doesn’t feel like a job

Hooray: If there was one thing you could change about the wedding industry, what would it be?
Kate: The misconceptions caused by social media and Pinterest in particular (don’t get me wrong, I LOVE Pinterest and use Pinterest with most of my clients for inspiration) but unfortunately, specifically with flower and decor inspiration, it leads to a LOT of unrealistic expectations.

Hooray: The mistake you made that has taught you the most valuable lesson?
Kate: Wow there have been a lot of mistakes along this journey. But probably the biggest one is for those working moms out there juggling babies and business. Your babies are small for such a short time. Be there – don’t miss out on anything, hire an assistant (earn a little less money). You can always build your business up again when your babies get bigger but you can never have them over again.

Hooray: If you had to get married (again) what would be the ONE non-negotiable?
Kate: Amazing food and wine – gosh how your priorities change as you get older. I’m sure one of ours almost 10 years ago was free shooters (hahahaha!)

Hooray: Where do you see yourself and your company this time next year?
Kate: I love where my business is at the moment. I have managed to find balance between work and my kids (getting here came with some major challenges). I would like to see both businesses growing. I’d like to see The Wedding Company doing more away weddings (I limited us to the Midlands when baba number 3 came along and 2019 is the first year that I’ve taken bookings for wedding out of the Midlands again). With Crystal Barn our plans for 2019 are to get the restaurant going and to start picking up more corporate business. With Crystal Barn, we are constantly evolving and growing to ensure we stay ahead, our bookings for 2020 are looking great and we are looking at starting to branch out into corporate events too!

Hooray: If you could be anything else in the wedding industry, what would you be and why?
Kate: Design and florals feed my creative side so I think I’ll just stick to what I do. Though every now and then I think – hell it would be nice to have a weekend off! – which basically means I’d need to start baking cakes!

Hooray: Do you have any friends in the industry? Tell us who and how they impact you in this beautiful business.
Kate: I have so many friends in this industry and such a wonderful support system in these amazing industry friends – from fellow planners and florists, to venue owners, ministers, photographers, videographers, DJ’s, my cake baker, preferred caterer. . . I can’t possibly name anyone as I know I’d leave someone, who has contributed to the growth of my business and definitely my sanity, out!!!!

We are so blessed in KZN to have such a close knit industry where we all look out for and support one another. It’s phenomenal. There are weekly phone calls to industry friends for advice, venting or just passing on some industry love.

Hooray: Tell us about the last time you were really, really proud of yourself/job you completed.
Kate: I’m immensely proud of the Wedding Company and all the weddings we execute. I get a real kick out of pulling off a masterpiece and a massive hanging floral installation suspended over a dance floor last year that looked pretty spectacular, made us all go WOW!

But I think my major pride comes from the work we have done at Crystal Barn. When I look at what our team has achieved in such a short space of time, since we became partners in this business, it really does instil an awesome sense of pride.

We‘ve won some wonderful awards which haven’t been won because of the beautiful buildings that our amazing business runs from. They‘ve been won because of the amazing team that we have here and their hard work and sheer dedication – every single one of them has contributed to the success of Crystal Barn and we are so excited that we get to call this a job!

Kate, thank you so much for sharing a small part of your life with us today. We cannot wait to see both your companies blossom even more!
